Stillwater Artisanal Preternatural Cuvée #4

Tomorrow we get a release in Brian Strumke's Preternatural Cuvee series, a series of his most intriguing and special barrel-aged beer-wine hybrids that is meant to bridge the worlds of Farmhouse beers and natural wine. In 2014, Stillwater Artisanal procured a truckload of freshly emptied California wine barrels and filled them with a mix of blond and dark saisons. After three years in oak barrels, roughly two years of bottle conditioning, and many blending and tasting sessions, Stillwater is finally ready to release these five beautiful beer-wine hybrids.

This is Preternatural Cuvee #4, a barrel-aged farmhouse ale brewed with Viognier, Pinot noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.  These were aged 3 years in American, Hungarian and neutral French Oak barrels. Refermented in the bottle and lightly carbonated.  Complexity is an understatement here, with punches of wine, sour beer/Lambic and various oak notes coming through at different times.  8.2% abv and putting up a 4.34/5 on Untappd.  Only a couple cases of each made it to Maine, and most are going to on premise accounts, including Novare Res who is hosting the brewer for an event in late May.
