Domaine Monier Saint-Joseph Chatelet
One of the big wine distributors we work with closes out wines every so often. It allows us to grab some wines that normally would run at some extremely high prices and offer them to you for something a big more reasonable. This same distributor happens to carry wines from Kermit Lynch, arguably the best wine importer in the world. So we get to grab some Kermit Lynch wines for great prices. This is one of those wines. While we do carry some Rhone wines, we tend not to grab the small appelations in Northern Rhone, not because I don't love them and they aren't world class, but because bottles can easily get up to the $100 mark. But it would be tougher to find a better expression of Syrah in the world. The vineyards in the areas are on steep, rocky hillsides, great for growing grapes, terrible for harvesting grapes. The plots tend to be tiny and planted after a hard fought battles against stone and gravity. The best of these wines are made in minute quantities, so naturally they are rare and expensive. The Syrah grown here is known to have a firm core of minerality wrapped in savory, peppery flavors of smoked meats, olives and herbs, with grace notes of violets and red and black fruits. At Domaine Monier all the grapes are grown bio dynamically, meaning no pesticides, machine intervention, bio dynamic is a level above organic in the natural wine world. Aged for a year in oak tonneaux. Can age beautifully for 15-20 years.
